Proficiency Based Focus
AFHS ASL follows the Alpine School District World Language Standards Based Curriculum. Lessons and activities are planned to help you learn how to communicate in ASL with native signers and other members of the Deaf Community. Evaluations are not given to “test your knowledge” but to see what you can do with the language -- in authentic situations. Can you understand and be understood by others?

The four-point scale will be used to communicate student progress. This scale is also used to determine the overall letter grade. Grades will be determined based on the following and will NOT include any subdivided grades (ex. A-, B+, etc.)
benefits of homework
Missing and Late Work
Homework: Students are encouraged to turn in all work on time, but late work will be accepted for 4 days beyond the due date.
In-Class Activities: Students are encouraged to attend each class period. It is important for students to attend and participate in person. Students that are absent are missing out on opportunities to practice the language. Several In-Class Activities are not posted in Canvas, but all other In-Class Activities that are posted in Canvas are required - even if a student is absent the day it was presented. All In-Class Activities need to be completed before the end of Unit Assessment. At the end of each unit, corresponding In-Class Activities will be locked. Completion of these activities will be reflected in the PROUD Score posted in Skyward.
Assessments: Assessments that are missed will be marked “missing” or “blank” in the grade book until completed. Incomplete assessments result in a lack of evidence of student understanding and may cause a student to fail.
Retakes
Students are able to retake/rework any assessment or mastery check except for the final IPA assessments for the unit. Before a student can retake an assessment or mastery check, all practices for the term must be completed. Any retakes must be completed before the final unit assessment.

Participation:
Participation is a must in an ASL class. Students need to be present and on time to class. Any "in-class" assignments posted in Canvas NEED to be completed - even if an absence was excused. Any other in-class activities that were missed are just experiences that cannot be recreated outside of class. Any UNEXCUSED absence will drop your PROUD Score to 2/4. Students need to remain VOICE OFF during signing activities. Technology protocols are important to understand and follow. Our ASL Classroom is a NO JUDGE ZONE. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Proud Score for In-class participation - Including: attendance, tardies, in-class assignments, voice off, etc...

Do not wait until the last minute to submit assignments. Technology cannot be trusted! If you wait until the last minute and your technology doesn’t work, that will not be an acceptable excuse for late work. In college, assignments LOCK - and that’s the end. Now is the time to learn how to plan your time and understand that due dates are important in school and they WILL be important in your future endeavors.
